Fats & Oils

Helping you strike the right balance

Fats and oils can be very confusing, but they do play a key role in your overall health, so it is important to understand them.

The importance of fats and oils

Fats and oils supply energy, help absorb vitamins and are important for protecting organs and supporting cell growth. According to the USDA Dietary Guidelines, adults should keep total fat intake to 20%-35% of total calories with no more than 10% of daily calories coming from saturated fat.

A different rating model just for fats and oils

Guiding Stars rates* the fats and oils model separately from other food models as you can see below. This model reflects comparisons within the fats and oils categories only. So, when you are shopping, if you see one (icon with one Guiding Star), two (icon with two Guiding Stars) or three (icon with three Guiding Stars) Guiding Stars it means those items have more monounsaturated fat and omega-3’s (a type of polyunsaturated fat) and less saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sodium and added sugars.
